About the Atkins Diet Creator: Dr. Robert C. Atkins
Dr. Atkins was troubled by the increasing obesity problem that was common among his patients in the United States. So he set out on a path to try and fix the problem. During his research, he began to realize that it was the over consumption of refined carbs and sugars that caused the growing obesity issue. He realized that by eating these refined carbs and sugars it was causing the body to over create insulin. This eventually led to the drop in blood sugar, which was the main culprit in weight gain and retention. Dr. Atkins knew something had to change, so in 1963 he began to formalize and create what is now called the Atkins diet.
The Atkins team continues to educate consumers on weight loss and weight management. They make it their goal to help individuals like you reach their weight loss goals and maintain a life-long healthy lifestyle. They know how difficult it can be to lose weight and keep it off. That is why they have continued to develop the Atkins diet with special foods and other products that can help you in the fight for perfect health.
How the Atkins Diet Works
The Atkins Diet is a diet that focuses on eliminating the “bad” carbs and fat from your body and replacing them with the “good” carbs and fat. Carbs and fat are your body’s two main fuel sources. If you’re eating a diet low in fat you begin to over consume carbs. The idea behind the Atkins Diet is to balance your intake with unrefined carbs and healthy fat to push you in the right direction of health. On the Atkins diet you will up your intake of proteins, healthy fats, nuts, most cheeses, and a whole lot of leafy greens and vegetables.
There are four Phases to the Atkins Diet.
- Phase 1 is called the Induction phase. This is where you kick-start your weight loss.
- Phase 2 is known as the Balancing phase and this is where you’ll start to climb the Carb Ladder. You’ll slowly introduce foods you had to eliminate in Phase 1.
- Phase 3 is the Pre-Maintenance or “Fine Tuning” part of the program. You will gradually increase your daily Net Carb intake while you continue to explore the final three rungs of the Carb Ladder.
- Phase 4 is the Lifetime Maintenance phase. This part of the program is actually more of a lifestyle than it is a phase. You will continue to build off of what you’ve already learned and will be able to use it for the rest of your life.
The Atkins Diet In’s & Outs
There are two ways you can choose to approach the Atkins Diet. The first way is called the Fast Track. Here you will lose most of your weight in the first Phase before moving on the other 3 phases. This way will definitely be more difficult because you are for more restricted with your food intake. The upside is you will see results in a fraction of time. The second way is the Slow & Steady. This is the normal route most people chose to take. You will quickly go through the first phase and then begin to introduce more foods as you lose most of your weight in the second phase.
What can or can’t you eat is always a big question in this diet. And the answer is, you’ll eventually be able to eat almost anything in moderation. However, during the first few phases you will be limited. For example, in Phase 1 you will be restricted to only non-starch veggies, proteins such as chicken, fish, and turkey, and nuts or seeds. The second phase, which is about two weeks into the diet, you will be able to introduce more foods such as specific types of fruits, dairy, and legumes. Phase 3, you will begin to incorporate the rest of the foods that you’ll be able to eat throughout the rest of the program and your life. These foods include: additional fruits, starchy veggies, and whole grains.
