About the Les Mills COMBAT Directors: Dan & Rach
Dan Cohen is a British born personal trainer who has a passion for making peoples lives better through physical fitness. His background and love of the martial arts have helped him become the success that he is in the fitness world. Dan is the former British Master Kickboxing Champion, as well as the runner-up for World Kickboxing Championship. He currently is the program director and international master trainer for Les Mills COMBAT and Les Mills CXWORX. He has been able to instruct thousands of people all over the planet and has even been able to be an international trainer for Les Mills PUMP. He currently resides in New Zealand and continues to help people just like you achieve their fitness potential.
Rach Newsham is also originally from United Kingdom. She, like Dan, has a passion and drive for fitness. She got her start however, by answering a local gym ad, which stated “Personality more important than qualifications.” And boy did she have the personality. She became a local success and led her down the road to where she is now. She now has years of martial arts training, as well as dance qualifications. She holds an honors degree in sports management, and has attended a Wing Chun Kung Fu school and is a graduate of the world-renowned WMC Lamai Muaythai Camp in Thailand. She too currently makes New Zealand her home and is the director of Les Mills COMBAT and SH’BAM. Rach says, “They each feed different parts of me. SH’BAM makes me feel free and light with no cares or worries. Les Mills COMBAT deals to the darker side of me which is strong and driven and I get to expel my energy in a fiercely empowering way.”

How Les Mills COMBAT is Different
Unlike other workout programs Les Mills COMBAT uses several different martial arts practices to deliver incredible results in only 60 days. Dan and Rach use what they like to call Fast Twitch Integration Training. What this does, is it blasts your fast twitch muscle fibers (which are the fibers with the greatest capacity for change) by taking dynamic moves from six different forms of martial arts. You’ll burn up to 1,000 calories per hour by using martial arts disciples such as Karate/Kung Fu, Capoeira, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Boxing. In case you’re not familiar with some of these forms of martial arts we can break it down and explain them.
The first is one of the most common in America and that is Karate/Kung Fu. And if you’ve seen The Karate Kid growing up you’ll have a little idea of what this form is all about. Essentially though, Karate is a striking art that uses punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and various forms of open hand techniques. (But don’t think Rach and Dan will be as easy on you as Mr. Miyagy.)
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art and one that is not as widely known here in the U.S. This form of martial arts combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It is known for it’s quick and complex moves that use power, speed, and leverage for various kicks and spins.
Jiu Jitsu is a unique style of fighting in that it uses the opponent’s own weight against them rather than relying solely on the force of one’s own self. This technique was developed to use against armored opponents who carried no or only a short weapon.
Muay Thai/Kickboxing is a form of martial arts that is sometimes referred to as “the art of eight limbs” because it uses the entire body movement, rotating the hip with each kick, punch, elbow, and block.
Tae Kwon Do is another popular form of martial arts in the United States. This form combines combat and self defense techniques with sport and exercise. In Tae Kwon Do you will use a lot of blocks, kicks, punches, and open hand strikes; along with various amounts of takedown moves. Sparing is also used in high doses in Tae Kwon Do and individuals all around the world will enter sparing matches to prove their abilities.
Boxing is the last form of martial arts you will use and this is by far the most common in the United States. It uses a series of jabs and thrusts with the hands as well as focuses on how to properly block your face and body from getting hit. It has an extensive history as a sport and many people worldwide will sit down in front of their televisions to watch a fight.
