- Wheat Breads
Even Multi-Grain and Wheat. While a lot of people that are trying to lose weight try to stay away from white breads, even Multi-Grain and Wheat breads can be bad for you. One reason is that these breads can be made with refined grains and if you want to eat bread you want the nutritional benefit of whole grains. Make sure you read the nutrition label and if you see bleached or unbleached enriched wheat flour as the first ingredient you are not getting the bread you want.
- Protein Bars
We all try protein bars, however some contain more sugar and calories than many candy bars. Make sure you read the nutritional information and look at the amount of sugar per serving. More than 20 grams of sugar or a bar that is over 200 calories is not worth eating.
Granola is one food that I was really surprised that you should stay away from. You would think it is very good for you especially as it is filled with nuts and oats. What you don’t know is that to make it so tasty it has a lot of added sugar to give it that crunchiness we all love.
- Processed Juices
Nothing I love more, besides my coffee, than a big glass of orange juice with my breakfast. However, that glass of vitamin C does more harm than good. If you check out the label there a lot of carbohydrates in the juices (mostly coming from sugar). With juice you are also missing out on the fiber you need. Eat an orange or two as an alternative.
What are salads doing on a list like this? With anything there are good and bad options. Many dressings are filled with fat, so watch out how much you take in. One option here would to make your own dressings, that way you know what is in it.
- Peanut Butter
When looking for peanut butter, make sure you read the labels and if you end up with a Reduced Fat Peanut Butter, it may not be worth the difference. The reason is sugar, to keep the taste palatable peanut butter companies will load it with sugar. Since peanuts are a good source of monounsaturated fats go with a natural peanut butter.
- Bran Muffins
This is one food where you really have to watch the size of the food as the portions can be really huge and some muffins can be over 350 calories. Then, if you add butter or jam to it you are increasing the number of calories that much more.
The average fruit smoothie will start out good, with blended fruit, fruit juices, and ice. However some will contain ice cream or sherbet and with the high serving size the number of calories can really add up. Make sure you check the website for the chain you go to and see the ingredients as well as the number of calories in that drink.
